I will be raising it higher in the near future. Walcott radio service was great, recieved it fast, ordered on Friday by Monday it was here Many thank Walcott Radio Great job Jeff C. Back 25 yrs ago I had a single Antron 99 mounted on a twelve ft pole on top of a 3 story apt building.
I used a cobra gtl that I bought new and had a guy I knew tune it for me. I remember the first time I played with it, I keyed up on a regular channel trying to determine my effective range for talking around Tulsa, Ok, where I lived. A guy responded and said I was booming in on his mobile radio shack uniden radio and a " whip antenna out south of town. I was excited since he said I was "booming" in on him and he sounded good on my end too.
I asked him like 3 or 4 times to tell me whereabouts south of Tulsa he was, but nothing he said sounded familiar. Eventually we figured out that he was indeed south of the city, but it wasnt MY city. On channel 16 he said I sounded like I was parked next to him Well, altho I didnt have that kinda luck every day, it wasn't a rarity either. Whether I was on a standard channel or side band, that Antron helped me visit with people all over the world. I am thinking of getting back into the radio biz again.
I lost track of how many cities over the years I was able to reach while skipping the atmosphere on side band at night.
I had a good radio, and no doubt it helped me, but I am fully convinced that I chatted with an expat in Israel one evening. He had the exact same setup that I did, and had the same results I did. We were able to visit on and off many times, and we both were crystal clear. I've heard that some people get two A99's and mount them in tandem on a rotating bracket they can aim like beams, but I never felt the need for that kind of upgrade.
Eugene T. Wanda D. We have used an a99 antenna for over 20 years and never once had a problem with the antenna. We also use this antenna at work and at home. This a great cb antenna. This the best cheap antenna made. Primo A. I live in an apartment complex so I came up with a pretty good fix where I can take the A99 in and out at my leisure The top of the antenna ends up about 5 or 6 feet above the roof line. I realize that this is not good for maximum performance but And just a side note: My north is the side where my apartment is blocking the base of the antenna!
Thanks guys for a great antenna. Alan R. This is an outstanding base antenna. Out of the box SWR and I reach out and touch folks. I have my A99 on top of a 35 foot mast and my first contact, asking for a radio check, was another base station at exit on IH O-yes it does.
James C. Take his It's one of the best skip shooting antennas I have come across also. Re: Antron 99 use washers or not? Post by Master Virus » 08 Nov , Its cool i found out my answer, you need them. Post by Tigersaw » 08 Nov , You mean the spring washers between the 3 pieces? Nope you don't need them, just makes it a bugger to take apart, and makes the seal poor letting water into the thread last bit is my opinion after trying both ways.
Post by Master Virus » 09 Nov , yes the locking washers, some said if you don't use them it works its way apart and the swr goes high, says that in the manual too, but i've seen a lot not use them.
Post by ROTEL » 09 Nov , I have never used them I put a rubber o ring over the threads then tightened the two sections up and put self amalgamating tape over the joints. I have a spare set of washes here if anybody wants them FREE pm me. Post by Master Virus » 09 Nov , Well i was thinking the washers were going to let in water and you could tape the joints to stop water getting in.
Thanks for the replies though. Post by astradyne » 10 Nov , When I used an A99 I didn't bother with the locking washers, but I did use something called Threadlock. You just apply it to the thread just prior to assembly.
It's strong enough to hold the antenna together and prevent it from unscrewing, but not so tough as to make disassembly difficult. Never, ever, ever Far too many radio's to list here.
But I do own a legal one Post by Master Virus » 10 Nov , I don't think i will bother with the washers and i will get some thread lock. Thanks to all that replied. Post by Stronty » 10 Nov , I don't think i will bother with the washers and i will get some thread lock. Post by GoldVolvo » 10 Nov , I think the main issue with threadlock is people using way too much. Post by The Collector » 10 Nov , Better to use them than not.
They're anti-vibration washers and supplied for a reason, but won't cause leaks if not used as the water can't get down past the threaded holes anyway. As said above, just a spot of thread-lock solution can be used on jusy say the top 2 or 3 threads and a touch all around the top once tightened in place to seal it nicely. That's exactly what I've just done and talked about on the Imax topic where I've stuck a tank-whip on top instead of the normal top section.
