His ultra-liberal, anti-conventional rustic Connecticut family doesn't exactly warm to the outsider, who despite her best efforts to please the prospective in-laws, looks, sounds, and acts like the conservative bigots they hate, while various Stones have their own problems.
Only matriarch Sibyl Stone's unshakable maverick other son Ben gives her a chance, and as Everett won't actively turn against either, she feels more supported by him and a weird romance blossoms. Feeling beleaguered, Meredith calls in help from her easygoing sister Julie, who proves no help to her but soon develops a chemistry with Everett, so everything may now shift if they dare follow their hearts. Feel The Love. Rated PG for some sexual content including dialogue, and drug references.
Did you know Edit. Trivia Writer and director Thomas Bezucha put the nine cast members playing the Stones through several weeks of rehearsal so they would bond well enough off-camera to convincingly portray a family. This included a crash course in American Sign Language, as eight of the nine characters would be called upon to utilize American Sign Language in the script to either communicate with or interpret for the character of Thaddeus.
While some critics, and the cast members themselves, pointed out that their American Sign Language use was sub-par, it was actually a realistic portrayal of a hearing family's use of the language, which is often perfunctory at best. An aerial shot of the town square clearly shows a New Jersey Transit train pulling out of the station, such trains do not run into New England. Soundtracks Let It Snow! Let It Snow! User reviews Review. Top review. A Mixed Stone. The Family Stone was a mixed bag.
It had great acting, laugh out loud scenes, and heart breaking moments, but in the meantime, I felt it didn't know what it wants to be, some of the characters were stereotypes we've seen a hundred times before, and I thought some of things happening were totally unbelievable.
The film tells the story of uptight businesswoman Meredith Sarah Jessica Parker who meets the parents of her boyfriend Everett Stone Dermot Mulroney for the first time during the Christmas celebrations. The picture didn't know whether it wants to be a slapstick comedy, or a heartfelt drama. One minute we see pratfalls, the next we wee people crying and talking about the freedom of sexual orientation. These fast mood swings really hurt the movie, as it was at its best when it kept the same tone for more than 10 minutes; I was laughing out loud at the Chritmas morning scenes, and I was really touched by the scene between Sybil Diane Keaton and Kelly Craig.
T Nelson in the bed. The movie had a lot of characters, but unfortunately, only half of these characters were interesting. The best character was Sybil, the loving and strong mother who keeps all the family together. I also liked Everett, the man who wasn't sure of the decision he's going to make. Anyway, there also some stereotypes like Meredith and Amy Rachel McAdams , the annoying sister who was just there to hurt Meredith.
I felt Susannah Elizabeth Reaser and her daughter Elizabeth Savannah Stehlin were in the picture just to add a cute little girl to the mix. And I think the film could have used more time to give us a better idea of some characters like Julie and Ben Luke Wison.
But it's always a good sign when you wish a film was longer; Frankly, I was entertained throughout the film. The Family Stone had a great cast, with some actors giving their best performances in a long time, and I'm surprised no one from the cast was nominated for an Academy award. Diane Keaton was terrific as the mother, and her first and last scenes in the movie are truly heartbreaking.
And although I'm not a fan of Parker, I thought she pulled of her role quite well. Yeah yeah, Cunts much? We know the film isnt going to go down in history as the greatest, but it's still fun, wrapped up in a nice lil trite bow. A purdy bow Lighten up or gett outta my face I'm going to watch this movie tonight or tomorrow, and fast forward all the parts I don't like e.
Another thing I like about this movie is that it was filmed in and around Madison, NJ which is a really nice quaint town in Morris County. Very scenic and beautiful. I can't watch the film because it was filmed where I went to school, and the thought of both Keaton and Parker on campus makes me ashamed. I love this movie. Even though Clare Danes seems really clunky maybe it's her shoes?
SJP is very good and I love Keaton. Two scenes that I love: When SJP hands out her Xmas gifts and the reaction from the family and the scene where Keaton is watching it start to snow.
Both get me every time. I saw this when it first came out. My mom was dying and I had no idea how the movie was going to end. I cried like a baby. I found the last scene where they family is having their first Xmas without their mom quite comforting and I didn't feel so alone.
It's a sweet movie and the performances are all good, McAdams in particular. There's just something that doesn't work about this film I love the house and the snow, plus Luke Wilson being the relaxed son who gets SJP to let her freak flag fly. Not amazing but not terrible either. It does a good job at portraying gays as normal, they made a really cute family imo. LIke a lot of these holiday movies, I didn't like it the first time I watched it, but I happened upon it today while feeling particularly stabby toward my landlord shitty heat, even on Christmas Day!
Does JSP suffer from social anxiety? I mean, after watching her on Watch What Happens Live a few weeks ago, I realize she comes off as very similar to this character in real life. She was just so emotionally frail and dottish that I wondered about her mental health. Of course, it had a semi-sweet ending but you can't have everything:. Terrible movie. The family has got to be the most annoying, unlikable one ever.
The lengths that the writers went to make that family "liberal" I can't remember man? Good lord. I really hated the family in this too. But i guess that was the point. If the family didnt act like smug assholes there wouldnt have been a film. McAdams character does not live at home. When we first see her she's arriving home for Xmas lugging a huge bag of dirty laundry which, presumably, she's bringing home to mom or she's going to do it herself using the family washing machine.
No, when the mother is trying to get Luke Wilson and Clare Danes together she mentions that he's a documentary filmmaker in SF. Bewildered, he lists other occupations of family members and says that Rachel is a teacher. The judging of a new partner by the rest of the family is an interesting idea for a film, but it's weird that it was handled so badly in the film as we're obviously meant to like the family and yet SJP gets our sympathy.
Yes indeed, we too use "cookies. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs. Become a contributor - post when you want with no ads! The Family Stone Who else loves this underrated Christmas classic? And the last 10 minutes always make me cry. R3: I really couldn't agree more.
SJP is nearly excellent in this movie. I want to fuck the gay son so much. He's so goddamned cute! What about Sly? I actually love that movie. I also love Brian J. White - damn, he's F. I'm watching it right now and it is surprisingly good. The last ten minutes are really good. Makes me cry as well. The main characters were named after a teacher and his wife from my high school.
I liked that SJP played unlikeable. It's always a treat to watch a Christmas movie in which they explicitly assume that gays exist. Let's list them: 1 The Family Stone 2. I fucking hate this movie! What an unlikable family. SJP was the only sympathetic character.
You can tell that the SJP character is uptight because she wears her hair in a bun. I think I love R4. Home for the holidays is a much better movie. And it has a gay character. The only reason I watch this movie is because of the set design. I want that house. I want the house too!! It is chick fantasy. Rachel mcadams pings in this flick. This is actually the movie that made me love Rachel McAdams.
Me, too, Movie was trying way too hard with that over the top PC gay couple. But this movie coined a phrase that has entered into our culture: Let your freak flag fly. I'll take Home for the Holidays over this crapfest any day.
Sweetie, you just described the entire Datalounge membership. You really didn't hope for gay children, did you? PC gay agenda crapola. Nickleback is my favorite group! Barbra Streisand was initially offered the Diane Keaton role but turned it down.
For anyone in Canada, W is airing it right now. Take it from one who knows. The next to last scene with Diane Keaton watching the falling snow always gets me. It's on FX HD right now. It just started. I thought it was awfully nice of the family to take in a stray horse during the holidays.
What exactly have YOU accomplished, bitter shit-stain at R78? It's a fine movie, and well-written. People who love this movie eat their own shit. That includes me. Hated it at the theater but now it's a christmas time favorite. Poor Diane Keaton's character had her tits chopped off. Don't forget LA Story, r You're as charming and knowledgable at R86 as you were at R You sound like a fat angry teenager. And you write like one. I'm dancing to a Motown song as we speak! Claire was also really good!
They sign the language horrible i couldnt stand to look thismovie. Rachel was wonderful. I gave my grandfather a rusty trombone and he gave me a dirty sanchez! Totes just watched this again yesterday. I need to watch this again.
There's also the godawful partner swapping, R It just seems so twee. Ghastly junk. My favorite part is when SJP's character drops the goddamn strata she'd been laboring over. Just watched it. Diane Keaton's character is so obnoxious. I think it balances broad comedy and family tragedy nicely.
First time I saw this I was hoping Keaton would pop out from behind the Xmas tree at the end. No such luck :. I hate this movie and its smug, entitled family so much. Does Rachel McAdams character still live at home? R - I think so. I felt for SJP's character. I don't think there's any mention of her not having a job.
But she does get the hot hunky beefy fit fat guy at the end so I hate her for that. So the huge room in the attic was what? A guest bedroom? Isn't the Rachel character in college? All rights reserved.
