This happens right off the bat and no chance to go into safe mode. Can anyone help? Thanks, Johnny. Link Longshot but try and hit F8 before the machine starts loading windows.
Get a friend to give you an XP CD. The system hive is Windows XP achilles heel. I've seen this issue about 5 times. Usually it happens when Windows experiences a power failure during some point. I can't confirm this because I've just seen users come to me with it and they said they turned on their machine and this is what they saw.
Google for Memtest86 if you want a good memory tester. You're fucked. A repair install will get you back into XP, but any programs that depend on registry entries will have to be re-installed.
As a side note, does XP have any facility for backing up the registry, besided the worthless "repair" folder? Or do you have to do it manually? I've also had this happen a number of times, and replacing the registry hive in question usually does fix it.
This is also a good reason to do regular registry backups that can be accessed via the repair console. The RegBack program that comes with the Win2K Resource kit is an excellent way to automatically back up the registry hives, especially when used in conjunction with the Windows scheduler.

Try running the disk cleanup utility. This is a common Windows maintenance task, and can help for some system32 errors.
Check all boxes, and click OK. If the system32 error only appears if when you try to run a certain program, then try running that program in compatibility mode.
