University of texas orange and white game 2013

On a related note, and perhaps for similar reasons, it didn't seem like there was one group of 11 capable of providing the looks that co-offensive coordinator Major Applewhite wanted, as there was a fair number of substitutions on most drives. The desire to get a lot of players reps may have played a large role in those decisions for Applewhite, but it also unquestionably slowed the offense down at times in terms of getting plays off at a breakneck pace.

To that extent, finding that dual threat remains critical for Texas. One of the players who has drawn some positive buzz for his play this spring has been redshirt freshman defensive end Caleb Blueitt, a player who was at tight end last year and made the move back to the position Texas had recruited him at after Signing Day when the 'Horns failed to land any prospects along the defensive line.

His may have been the best performance of all the defensive ends, as he was consistently in the backfield even though he was typically working with the second team against the first-team offensive line, getting credited for a sack against David Ash on a play that was blown dead, stopped a reverse well behind the line of scrimmage when he played contain and brought down Daje Johnson , as well as finding himself around the football several other times.

Reggie Wilson may have a battle on his hands to as he tries to stay ahead of Bluiett in the defensive end rotation. It may have been against the walk-on coverage team again, but safety Mykkele Thompson once again made a case to have the ball in his hands more often with an impressive return that saw him break a tackle, bounce off some congestion, and then take off around the corner until kicker Nick Jordan presented himself for a decent tackling attempt for a kicker along the sideline.

Just don't look for it to actually happen beyond kick returns -- it was Duke Thomas who made the move from defense to offense at times during the game due to the lack of receivers and unsurprisingly looked like the natural athlete that he is out there. Putting Thompson back there on kick returns does look like a possibility, though. After all, what else does the kid need to do to get the football somehow another than make plays when he gets it?

One of the depth chart surprises of the evening was sophomore Nick Rose trotting out to kick field goals and extra points for the first-team offense after handling kickoff duties exclusively last season. On his short-range efforts he was fine and showed off his impressive leg by putting two balls out of the endzone on kickoffs, one of which bounced in the handicapped seating area that constitutes the first row on the north side.

However, on his attempt from 42 yards out at the start of the second half, he missed just wide right, echoes of the second open practice last spring. HIs leg is there, but the question is whether the consistency can there often enough. It apparently has been based on his start, but that area of special teams remains a big concern, as does punting after Anthony Fera was highly uninspiring with his ability to drive the football on two efforts that averaged about 33 yards.

And the Office of the Dean of Students has been counting down 17 Days of Longhorn Pride in honor of the Class of , sharing trivia, traditions and facts about the Forty Acres.

Below are a few of our favorites. The Tower was first lit during the football season. Orange and white first made their appearance as school colors in when two Texas fans on the way to a baseball game ran to a general store in search of matching ribbons for the crowd.

The shopkeeper sold them orange and white because those were the colors he had the most in stock. The colors were officially adopted in In the s, the forty-acre UT campus consisted of a still-unfinished Victorian-Gothic Main Building, a chemical lab building to its northwest, and a plain-looking men's dorm, known as Brackenridge Hall, or "B. All were fashioned from pale yellow Austin pressed brick, and trimmed with cream-colored limestone quarried in nearby Cedar Park.

The Gebauer Building, built in for engineering, is today the home for College of Liberal Arts, and is the last survivor of this early UT architecture. Students identified themselves with their surroundings on the campus, and several University teams donned gold and white uniforms.

Of course, gold and white weren't official, either, and only lasted a couple of years. Members of the student-run UT Athletic Association wanted a more "masculine" color, and in orange was paired with white once more.

White uniforms, though, were difficult to clean after a hard-fought victory on the football field. In , to save cleaning costs, the Athletic Association opted for a darker color that wouldn't show dirt as easily: maroon. For the next three years, UT football, baseball, and track uniforms, along with letter sweaters, were orange and maroon. This created more than a little controversy, especially among the alumni. Adding to the confusion was the Cactus Yearbook, at the time published by the Athletic Association, which listed the University colors as either gold or orange and white.

The appearance of the Cactus made matters worse. It suddenly declared the University colors to be "Gold and Maroon," which just happened to be the same hues used for the yearbook's cover. And all the while, students the University's medical branch in Galveston wanted to throw out the double-colors in favor of a single one: royal blue. Attending a football game in , a UT fan would have found his compatriots sporting all shades of yellows, oranges, whites, reds, maroons, and a few in blue.

After considerable discussion, the Board of Regents decided to hold an election to settle the matter. Students, faculty, staff and alumni were all invited to send in their ballots. Out of the 1, votes cast, were for orange and white, a majority by just seven votes. Orange and maroon receive , royal blue , crimson 10, royal blue and crimson 11, and few other colors scattered among the remaining 15 votes. For almost thirty years, UT athletic teams wore bright orange on their uniforms, which usually faded to a yellow by the end of the season after having been washed a few times.

By the s, other college teams sometimes called the Longhorn squads "yellow bellies," a term that didn't sit well with the athletic department.
